Zinedine Zidane was one of football's greatest players. He could whip in a perfect cross or burst the net with his magical feet. He wasn't as popular as Beckham is now or Ronaldinho but he still was brilliant. In the 2006 world cup final Zidane headbutted Marco Materazzi for what appeared no reason at all. This headbutt earned Zidane a famous name but not a good one and rumours started spreading of why Zidane did it. British newspaper, Daily Mail, said Materazzi used racial abuse to anger Zidane. Matterazzi accepted these damages. In 2006 his lawyer, Jane Phillips, denied the fact that Materazzi said to Zidane he is a "son of a terrorist whore" due to the fact that his parents are Algerian.

A player with the experience of Zidane should be well accustomed to serial provocation by defenders,for better of for worse it is part and parcel of the game at this level.
There is no excuse for his foolish reaction, he has brought shame on himself, his country, the world cup tournament and the entire sport of football across the globe.
